Movement Disorders
Movement disorders are conditions of the brain, spinal cord and nerves throughout the body that affect the ability to produce and control movement. Together, they control breathing, mood, speaking, learning, swallowing, walking, moving and vision.
Movement disorders are categorized in the following ways:
- Neurogenetic diseases (such as Huntington's disease and muscular dystrophy)
- Developmental disorders (such as cerebral palsy)
- Degenerative diseases of adult life (such as Parkinson's disease and Lewy Body disease)
- Metabolic diseases (such as Gaucher's disease)
Symptoms of movement disorders include:
- Dyskinesia (difficulty performing voluntary movement)
- Hyperkinesia (excessive voluntary movement)
- Hypokinesia (slow voluntary movement)
- Ataxia (lack of coordination, often producing jerky movements)
- Dystonia (involuntary movement and prolonged muscle contraction)
