Dr. Rayford was born in Byhalia, MS, and is one of eighteen children born to Henry and Freddie Mae Rayford. His parents instilled in their children the value of an education and the ability to achieve their goals through perseverance and hard work.
Dr. Rayford attended Byhalia High School where he was elected “Mr. Byhalia” by the student body and graduated with honors at the top of his class. He completed his undergraduate studies at Grambling State University in Grambling, LA, with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. While a student at Grambling State, Dr. Rayford received the following honors: Dean’s List, President’s List, Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universities, Distinguished Freshman and Senior Chemistry Major, Alpha Kappa Mu and Beta Kappa Chi Honor Societies and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
Dr. Rayford pursued postgraduate studies at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, and in 1987 received his doctorate in biochemistry.
Dr. Rayford received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He completed both his internship and internal medicine residency at University of Tennessee Medical Center in Memphis, TN. Dr. Rayford completed his cardiology fellowship at the University of Arkansas Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1998. He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology.
Dr. Rayford is an accomplished clinician, healthcare researcher, author and educator. He is active in a number of local and national professional societies and organizations including the American Medical Association, American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, National Medical Association, Association of Black Cardiologists, Mississippi Medical and Surgical Association and Jackson Medical Association.
Dr. Rayford met his wife Dr. Edith Smith-Rayford while attending medical school. Dr. Edith Smith-Rayford is an obstetrician/gynecologist at University Medical Center in Jackson, MS, and they are the proud parents of a son, Richard II and a daughter, Margie Areias. The Rayford family are members of Terry Grove Baptist Church in Terry, MS.
Dr. Rayford’s special interests in medicine are interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology. In his leisure time he likes to swim and play basketball.
